Description:
The Chloroptera Macaw measures up to 95 centimeters in length and weighs up to 1.5 kg. It has a robust and stocky body, a long tail, a large red head with cheeks whose white and bare skin is streaked and spotted with red. The feathers of the body and tail are also red with yellow traces towards the lower belly and some blue rectrices.
The remiges are also of this color while the wing coverts are green (hence the specific name of this bird). The beak is massive with the upper mandible flesh pink and the lower black. The legs are dark gray and the black irises edged with light. Its cries are shrill.
Habitat:
The Red-winged Macaw lives diurnally, at low and medium altitudes in tropical forests, especially along rivers.
Distribution:
This bird lives in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil (Parana and Mato Grosso), Paraguay and Argentina (in the north of the country).
Diet:
It is a granivorous and frugivorous bird.
Reproduction:
The Red-winged Macaw nests in the hollows of trees. The female lays two eggs that she incubates for about 27 days. The young fly away at the age of three months but do not become independent until between four and six months. These animals form faithful couples throughout their lives.
